Connecting Charitable Giving to Environmental Causes

Renewable World is delighted to announce that it has become the latest partner of 1% for the Planet, a US initiative to connect the charitable giving of companies to nonprofits working on environmental causes.

1% for the Planet was originally launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Matthews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. Since then it has grown to an alliance of more than 1,000 member companies in 40 countries that are committed to giving one percent of their revenues to nonprofits working to address environmental issues.

Over 3,800 nonprofits worldwide are included in the 1% for the Planet network, and over (US) $145 million has been given to these nonprofit partners to date.

This exchange of capital shows an environmental commitment by the companies involved, and provides essential funding for the nonprofits to continue their vital work.

1% for the Planet member businesses donate at least 1% of their annual sales to support environmental nonprofits,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “We believe deeply that these nonprofits play a critical role in solving the many challenges facing our planet, and our core work is to grow the corporate support that enables these nonprofits to accomplish even more.

The work that we do here at Renewable World contributes to a healthier planet by providing renewable energy systems to communities in developing countries, helping to relieve poverty through sustainable development, whilst minimising the damage done to the climate.

As an international development charity, combatting poverty is our primary goal, but we realise that this cannot be achieved without also preventing the damage done to the environment”, says Paddy Vipond, Renewable World’s Fundraising Officer. “A recent UN report warned that if we don’t address climate change, an extra 122 million people could fall into extreme poverty by 2030.

It is the responsibility of everyone on this planet to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate, to build a sustainable future, and to protect the natural environment. That is why Renewable World is delighted to join other like-minded organisations and businesses in 1% for the Planet to achieve these goals.
