Renewable World Runners Triumph at the Brighton Marathon

April 16, 2012

Running a marathon is not everyone’s cup of tea, but last weekend three brave Renewable World runners took on the third Brighton Marathon and all finished the course in less than 5 hours, raising vital funds for Renewable World’s work on providing access to energy for some of the world’s poorest people.

Alan Simpson, Vaughan Weighill and Renewable World’s own Sarah Farney took part in the seaside course which takes in the cities iconic sights, including the historic Brighton Pavilion and trendy North Laines. Alan Simpson, a partner at law firm HB Gateley is no stranger to marathons and crossed the line in an impressive 3 hours and 31 minutes making all the training worth it. Whilst Renewable World’s Fundraising Manager Sarah Farney was not far behind finishing in a personal best of 3 hours 41 minutes.

Vaughan Weighill from E.ON finished his first ever marathon in a very respectable 4 hours and 35 minutes proving to friends and family that he did have what it takes to go the distance! Brighton was a particularly fitting place for Vaughan to run his first marathon as he knows the Sussex Coast well as part of the team at E.ON who are responsible for developing the Rampion wind farm off the coast of Brighton and Hove. On contemplating what lay in store for him Vaughan said; ‘This is a massive challenge for me. I have run a half-marathon before, but the thought of getting to the 13 mile mark and doing the same over again is daunting to say the least.’  Thankfully Vaughan made it through to the end and his family were there to congratulate him at the finish line.

Between them the three runners have raised almost £2500 for Renewable World’s work and no doubt the donations will keep on coming now that they have completed their challenge.
