All eyes will focus on Rio this June as 20 years after the World’s first Earth Summit, world leaders meet again to discuss the challenges of how to get the World back on track to achieving a sustainable future. The World has changed since the first summit took place in 1992. Economic power has shifted, corporate influence has grown and political will has faded. There is a real need to take stock of what we have learnt and examine how this can be most usually applied to new contexts.
Vital to sustainable development is sustainable energy. Our current energy system is failing people and the planet. Substantial policy guidance, capacity building, innovative approaches to public investment are necessary to tackle climate change and poverty. Renewable World will be presenting alongside other organisations including Christian Aid, Practical Action and Friends of the Earth as part of Fair Ideas: Sharing Solutions for a Sustainable Planet. This event is a weekend long exploration of sustainable solutions organised by the International Institute of the Environment and Development (IIED).
The event includes an Energy Day which will take place on Saturday 16th June and opens up a space for researchers and practitioners to discuss best policy solutions like Feed-in Tariffs for the global south, energy delivery models, as well as low carbon pathways. The aim is to foster debate around key issues that will be happening during Rio+20 and beyond including the UN’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative.
As part of the event, Renewable World will be sharing our experience of implementing innovative delivery models for community based renewable energy systems in Africa, Asia and Central America.
