Renewable World Spring Reception 2016

May 3, 2016

On Tuesday the 26th of April, the Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa (MCFEA) played host to Renewable World’s 2016 Spring Reception. Renewable World staff and Trustees were joined by celebrity ambassador Gethin Jones, who was a masterful MC for the evening. Gethin has long been a supporter of Renewable World’s work, visiting our projects in both Nepal and Kenya in recent years. The reception was a good opportunity to thank supporters, present the recent BBC Radio 4 Appeal, and share Renewable World’s vision and plan for the future.

Renewable World Chair, Alex Hassan highlighted Renewable World’s goal of lifting 100,000 people out of poverty by 2020. Nick Virr, Renewable World’s Global Programme Manager spoke passionately of his motivations about our projects throughout Central America, East Africa, and South Asia telling the poignant stories of some of those whose lives have been transformed thanks to access to clean, cheap and reliable energy. His theme of inequality struck a chord with the guests.

A year before our Spring Reception, almost to the day, Nepal was struck by its worst natural disaster in over 80 years. It killed over 9,000 people and made hundreds of thousands homeless. We have been working with some of the affected communities throughout the last 12-months, helping them to rebuild their lives following the disaster.  Nick gave testament to the durability and importance of our projects in Nepal and highlighted the need to build resilience within communities, and it was the theme of resilience that Renewable World Vice Chair, Sarah Donnelly returned to later.  She then introduced Renewable World’s BBC Radio 4 Appeal, presented by explorer, Levison Wood.which you can listen to again here.

Everyone here at Renewable World would like to thank all those that attended on the night. The success of our work would not have been possible were it not for the continued support of people, companies and organisations. We are particularly grateful to Julie and MCFEA for kindly hosting our Spring Reception.

Special thanks to our event hosts:
