Our campaign: Energy for Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (E4WASH)

3.5 million Nepalis lack access to safe water. Rural communities are particularly affected. In Sindhupalchok, poor water infrastructure and sanitation threaten health and livelihoods. Gender inequalities permeate everyday life. Men migrate, leaving girls and women to manage household and agricultural work, facing excessive physical burdens, time costs and risks to their safety. Menstrual hygiene needs often go unmet, impacting negatively on girls’ education and impinging on their rights.

With your support we can ensure:

  • 180 farmers employ climate-smart agriculture practices using the new water supply to increase production of vegetables and spices. This will boost their ability to pay water tariffs providing funds to maintain the systems and boost community income, food security, and climate resilience.
  • An upgrade to waste systems in 3 schools while addressing unsafe hygiene amoung children and stigma around mentrual hygiene, leaving a legacy of improved support for girls’ education, young hygiene promoters helping their households stay safe, and reduced water-and-faeces-borne illness.
  • The community is continually engaged and local stakeholders establish and sustain successful local ownership of the systems installed and the project benefits for the long-term.
  • 9,000 people living in seven energy-poor off-grid rural communities in Nepal’s Gorkha District will be able to access quality 24/7 healthcare underpinned by clean energy solutions by 2025.
  • 14 health staff will be better able to operate and maintain clean energy systems, health equipment, water filtration systems, handwashing stations and improved toilet facilities.

How will we do it?

Our E4WASH projects have transformed over 31,000 Nepalis lives in remote hilltop areas.

Using solar energy, our Solar Multiple-Use Water Systems will lift up to 40,000 litres of safe water p/day to 3 of Sindhupalchok’s communities.

We’ll partner with communities, schools, and local authorities to encourage healthy practices to stop waterborne illnesses, support girls’ menstrual health, empower women in local leadership, and sustainably help farmers and households use water for better food production.
