Homa Bay Solar Livelihoods Project partnership

May 16, 2025

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with Empower New Energy! Together, we are embarking on a mission to enhance the livelihoods and household income of fishing and farming communities in Kenya’s Homa Bay County.

7,500 people living in Homa Bay’s Kiumba Beach communities rely on fishing and farming for their livelihood. Without proper cold storage, fish and produce spoils quickly. This enables buyers to set lower prices for the community’s produce, diminishing their returns. Illness due to unsafe lake water, inadequate investment in the sector, over exploitation of the water bodies, and evolving market access issues compound the situation, leading to reduced incomes.

Our new Homa Bay Solar Livelihoods Project partnership will empower the Kiumba Beach communities to create their change through clean energy. Working together with 500 predominantly female fisherfolk and farmers, we will establish local solar-powered cold storage and ice making solutions so that the community can sustainably and significantly reduce its losses and improve market access and prices. 1,500 households will have the opportunity to benefit from the economic upliftment of fisherfolk and farmers, and safe and affordable water access, improving the local economy and their quality of life.

Our deepest gratitude to Raja Dasgupta, Terje Osmundsen and all at Empower New Energy for making this possible and believing in transformational change through clean energy!
