Seven days to double your donation and help us Keep Kids in School

High up in the remote hill-top villages of Nepal’s Gulmi District, few schools have access to a reliable water source. Children must carry drinking water to school and the toilets have no water for flushing, cleaning or handwashing. This makes all children vulnerable to disease, and makes girls more likely to drop out when they hit puberty. In the long term, it undermines child health and limits girls’ education, often leading to early marriage, teen pregnancy and a lifetime of missed opportunity.

Our Keep Kids in School project will directly tackle these issues. It will provide 3,783 children with access to safe drinking water through solar water pumping, toilets and school wash-blocks, preventing disease transmission and helping children, especially girls, remain in school.

This year, Renewable World is taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge to raise funds for our Keep Kids in School project. For seven days, from 12pm on 1st December until 12pm on 8th December 2020, any donations you make through the Big Give website will be doubled.

What is the Big Give Christmas Challenge?

It’s the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, that connects corporate sponsors with participating charities. For seven days, it offers individual supporters of participating charities the opportunity to have their donation doubled on theBigGive.org.uk.

Why the Keep Kids in School project?

Deepa: a Nepali secondary school student

The toilets are so dirty! There is no water for the toilets during the dry season so when we have our periods we stay at home and miss lessons. I want the water and good toilets for my younger sister. That would make me very happy.“- Deepa Khatri (pictured to the left), aged 16, Ashwori Secondary School, Gulmi, Nepal

We want to make Deepa’s wish come true. We want to provide a better, more inclusive school environment for her sister and for all the other secondary school students in this rural municipality. Because we believe that access to education should be equal for all, and that access to water, hygiene and sanitation facilities should never deter a child from achieving their full educational potential.

Keep Kids in School will provide access to clean water in two schools that lie above their nearest water source using solar water pumping technology. In these and a further eight schools, we will construct new toilet blocks, creating child-friendly, gender-specific toilets, wash basins and menstrual hygiene management facilities that allow all children to stay in school and stay healthy. Newly formed children’s clubs will also raise awareness on the importance of good hygiene and education for all.

We have already secured some funding for this project, but we still have a way to go to ensure that we can get this project underway and deliver on our commitment to these schools and communities. With your support this Christmas, we can ensure that girls like Deepa never have to miss another day of school because of a lack of water.
